Baby on board: Flight crew to the rescue

Flight attendants are used to being asked for tea, coffee and perhaps a tipple of wine.

But the crew on board a Turkish Airlines flight were very surprised when they answered to the call of a passenger who was about to have a baby.

Passenger Nafi Diaby was on board the flight between Conakry, the capital of Guinea, and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso when she went into premature labour at 42,000 feet.

The crew on board managed to deliver the baby during the flight and in time for landing.

A Turkish Airlines statement said: “After the smooth landing of Boeing B737-900 type aircraft to the Ouagadougou airport, the mother Nafi Diaby and her new-born baby girl were taken to the hospital in order to be kept under observation for a while.”

The airline also tweeted a special message on on social media to celebrate the birth.

The baby has been named Kadiju.

The little girl will have plenty of choices when it comes to selecting her nationality: she is entitled to her mother’s nationality by descent, even though she was born in another country’s airspace.

Alternatively, the United Nations considers the baby’s birthplace to be the country where the plane is registered, in this case Turkey.
