Pastor Jamal-Harrison Bryant has been named the new senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest. Bryant is currently the pastor of Empowerment Temple in Baltimore. One hundred thirty-eight candidates were considered for the high-profile position.
Bryant, a Morehouse graduate, who recently ran for Congress against Rep. Elijah Cummings in Maryland. He has also been a strong advocate for justice and equality for people of color. Bryant will deliver his first official sermon as New Birth’s pastor on Dec. 9. He was formerly married to Gizelle Bryant the sassy single ready to mingle of The Real Housewives of Potomac.
Others who were rumored to be considered included Greenville pastor John Gray of Relentless Church, who currently has a show on the OWN Network ; Bishop Marvin Sapp of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. who is also a recording artist; and Bryant.
Bryant will take the reigns of popular but controversial pastor Bishop Eddie Long who died in 2017 of cancer. He was 63.
