Nene Leakes is coming back to scripted television.
Six years after the cancellation of “The New Normal,” the star of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” is going to be back on TV — this time on cable.
“Ride Or Die” is a murder-mystery comedy pilot coming from Pop TV and will star Leakes, “Rise” star Marley Shelton and actress Molly Sims. Jennifer Landon and Tawny Newsome also star in the show, Deadline reported Feb. 20.
The series follows down-on-her-luck outsider Shauna, portrayed by Shelton, who teams up with true-crime buff Glo, who is Leakes’ character, to hunt down a killer. Their actions flip an elite spin studio upside down.
Shauna will also have to contend with Jamie, a mean girl and a frenemy from her past life, who is portrayed by Sims. Additionally, Shauna faces the wildly ambitious Ali, played by Landon, who is threatened by the main character’s growing popularity. Yet the one person Shauna can really rely on is Lindy. Newsome’s character is an awkward front desk employee who is Shauna’s sole real work ally.
“She done, done it again! Another scripted series!” Leakes wrote on Instagram Wednesday. “I Was really trying to move in silence on this because i know the people that try to stop my greatness is watching me but i see it has hit the press #butGod #positivevibesonly.”
Fans couldn’t stop boosting the reality star’s newest professional move.
“Can’t wait! I’ve always loved you NeNe. You are a gem 💎 Let the haters hate 😬”
“Congratulations @neneleakes so deserving! Your talents are endless!”
“Yay!!! U deserve all good things!! Can’t wait to watch!!!!”
“So happy for you! You have done amazing things and God is right near your side all the way! 🙌🙌🙌🙌😘”
By Sunday, Leakes had already jetted off to Vancouver, Canada, to begin work on the show.
“We working #rideordie #canada @poptv,” she captioned the image of her table read. But being there meant she was not in Atlanta to attend “RHOA” castmate Porsha Williams’ baby shower.
Fans definitely took notice of her absence.
“Dang I was hoping you were going to be at Porsha baby shower… But get them coins sis.”
“@bronnybronnybronbron porsha bit the fingers that fed her! The door is closed.”
“Her and @porsha4real are clearly not cool anymore!!! Y’all gone see.”
The current gig comes not only after “The New Normal,” where Leakes made her mark playing Rocky Rhoades, but also a stint on the hit ABC series “Glee,” which she appeared as Roz Washington from 2012 to 2015. Between that time, she debuted on Broadway in 2014 as the Fairy Godmother in “Cinderella.” However, Leakes had not abandoned acting completely in that interim. Most recently, she had a cameo in last year’s big-screen comedy “Uncle Drew.”
