Prominent Donald Trump supporters Diamond and Silk recently tweeted a legal analysis of New York’s attorney general and the president retweeted as to make his thoughts known about the AG and her actions.
On Twitter Tuesday night, Diamond and Silk tweeted that New York Attorney General Letitia James is “abusing her power” by taking aim at Trump through her investigation into him.
“AG Letitia James of New York is abusing her power by targeting the POTUS. Using the Attorney General office as a weapon to deliberately target the President because of Political Bias should be against the Law and a violation of the Hatch Act!” the duo proclaimed March 12.
James issued subpoenas to Deutsche Bank and Investors Bank for records connected to the Trump Organization. Specifically, the documents are looking into the financing of four Trump real estate projects and his failed 2014 effort to buy the Buffalo Bills.
The move comes after the history-making AG’s campaign last year, where she vowed to investigate the president’s businesses and his family.
“We’ll use every area of the law to investigate President Trump and his business transactions and that of his family as well,” said James, who became the first Black woman to serve as the New York’s attorney general as well as the first Black woman elected to statewide office, told NBC News after she was elected to office in November.
While Trump retweeted Diamond and Silk’s claim as if were factual, many have poked holes in their position.
For one, the Hatch Act is a federal law that prohibits employees in the executive branch of the federal government, excluding those including the president and vice president, from engaging in certain types of political activity. However, since James is a state official, that law doesn’t apply to her. That’s a fact some Twitter users pointed out.
“Hatch Act doesn’t apply to NY AG. It applies to FEDERAL EXECUTIVE BRANCH employees. Try education.”
“The Hatch Act only applies to federal employees…..”
“Please explain to those of us who went to law school and practice law the implications of the Hatch Act to a state Attorney General.”
Others remarked about Trump’s relationship with Diamond and Silk, who have backed him since he was campaigning for office in 2016.
“He’s using them.”
“Looking for support at the bottom of the common sense barrel is embarrassing.”
“When the US president retweets the sentiments of a side show act called ‘Diamond and Silk’ he is beyond desperate! 🤦🏽♀️😂😂”
