Jordyn Woods Clears Up ‘What It’s Like Being a Black Woman’ Comment: ‘I Love Being a Black Woman’

Jordyn Woods sat down for an extensive interview with Cosmopolitan and touched on a bevy of topics, including NBA player Tristan Thompson and race.

In February of this year, Woods was seen kissing and holding hands with Thompson at one of his parties while the world thought he was still with the mother of his child Khloé Kardashian. Woods claimed that he initiated the kiss, but she still fell out with the entire Kardashian clan, especially Kylie Jenner, one of her close friends.

Woods was also bullied heavily on social media after the cheating scandal, which she talked about in April at the Homecoming Festival in Lagos, Nigeria. But Woods didn’t get the sympathy she might’ve been looking for because of what she said about being a black woman.

“My little sister was bullied in school, and I wanted to show her that I was bullied by the world,” she explained then. “I understood for the first time what it’s like being a black woman in a just society, how we can be so disrespected and nobody can really understand to that extent until you have lived it.”

Afterwards, some said Woods should’ve realized what being a black woman was like long ago and felt she only brought up race because she’s no longer around the Kardashians. Woods also grew up in the predominantly white area of Oak Park, California.

The 21-year-old talked about that comment during the Cosmopolitan interview and said it’s not that she just realized what it’s like to be a black woman, she just has a better idea of what it’s like to be one in the public eye.

“I have a clearer understanding of how this game works, and how people feel like it’s OK to say whatever they want,” she explained. “I know that I’m a black woman and I love being a black woman.”

Woods also talked about how she felt when Thompson kissed her.

“I didn’t know how to feel,” she admitted. “I was like, ‘That didn’t just happen.’ I [told him] ‘I need to go.’ I was leaving already, so I walked out immediately. I got in the car. I was in shock.”

“I went through a phase of thinking, ‘I’m going to isolate myself, because I don’t know how I feel. I don’t know what the right thing to do is,’” added Woods.
