‘Mind and Heart Have Been Heavy’: Khalid Announces Benefit Concert for Families of El Paso Shooting Victims

Like many around the world, the singer Khalid has been heavily affected by the mass shooting that occurred in El Paso, Texas, on August 3, where 22 people were killed and more than 24 injured.

But since Khalid is from El Paso and graduated from the city’s Americas High School just three years ago, he stands incredibly close to the tragedy.

So on Monday the 21-year-old announced that he’ll put on a benefit concert in his hometown that will help the victims’ families.

“Over the past few days, I’ve been thinking of ways to help out and support the city,” tweeted Khalid. “I’m planning for a benefit concert later this month, all of the proceeds will go to the families affected by the shooting. Sending everyone my love and will keep you guys updated.”

The singer also expressed how hurt he is by the shooting.

“My mind and heart have been heavy,” he wrote. “Hearing/seeing an act of terrorism happen so close to home, my family, and my friends has been unbelievable and shocking. Singing “915” and “city of El Paso” on tour every night feels indescribable.”

Called “A Night for Suncity,” the concert is spearheaded by the singer’s The Great Khalid Foundation, as well as the Right Hand Foundation, and it will take place at El Paso’s Don Haskins Arena on September 1.

Police say the person responsible for the shooting is 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, who’s now in custody. Investigators also say they’ve found a document they believe he authored that contains white supremacist language about people of color and immigrants.

He may soon be charged with hate crimes, capital murder, and prosecutors have already said they’ll seek the death penalty.

After Khalid made the concert announcement, many thanked him and asked how to donate if they wouldn’t be able to attend. It’s something the singer said he’s also thought about but wants to implement in the right way.

“We r proud of u Man. The city will always be thankful for u,” someone tweeted.

“You are truly an angel and this makes me so incredibly happy that you’re doing this for the city of el paso!” another person wrote.
