Khalid said he raised $500,000 at his benefit concert for the victims and families affected by the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, last month.

The singer announced the event, called “A Night for Sun City,” on August 5, two days after 22 people were killed and more than 24 injured at a Walmart Supercenter. The event took place on Sunday at Don Haskins Arena in El Paso, and money was raised through ticket and T-shirt sales. All of the proceeds will go to the El Paso Community Foundation’s Shooting Victims’ Fund as well.

“Last night we raised $500,000 for the El Paso Community Foundation! Thank you guys so much for the support,” wrote Khalid Monday on Instagram.

SZA was one of Sunday’s performers, as was Lil Yachty and Rae Sremmurd. Khalid also took the stage as the headliner and was introduced by presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, who’s an El Paso native. The actor Matthew McConaughey, also from Texas, made an appearance as well.

Khalid moved to El Paso for his senior year of high school and attended Americas High School after living in various parts of the U.S. because his parents were in the military.

After the singer’s post, many people thanked him for organizing the event, raising the funds and caring so much about El Paso. Especially since he didn’t grow up in the city and only lived there for a short time.

“What a great job! Salute 🔥” one person wrote.

“Proud of you💙,” wrote another.

“There is never not one bad comment about you khalid,” someone else let him know. “You are loved and you are one of the kindest people in this world. Thank you ❤️🙏🏼”
